About us

My husband Tim and I have owned Canal Cottage since 1998 and we live in the house adjoining it. Originally it was a canal-side pub for bargees when the canal was a vital means of transport for industry during the early 1800s. It was run by the proprietors of the Ship Inn, which is now our house. The Ship Inn closed in 1935 and the property, including Canal Cottage, was run as a bed and breakfast establishment until our family moved here in 1998.
We totally renovated the cottage in 2016, adding an upstairs bedroom and the mezzanine floor. We have tried to make it contemporary and comfortable with everything that you might need for a holiday, whilst retaining some original features.

The cottage opens directly onto the canal towpath which is used by walkers and cyclists and is situated in a beautiful, rural setting yet close to the market town of Skipton.

Tim and I give you space to enjoy your holiday in peace but we are available if you have questions or need help with anything. As recent retirees, we are often away in our motorhome. If we are not around when you visit we will make sure you have the contact details of someone else who can help you in our absence. We are grandparents and dog owners. We’re delighted to welcome well-behaved dogs and babies/ toddlers under 2 to the cottage.
We look forward to welcoming you to Canal Cottage.

Such a lovely, light, airy space thats full of charm. We loved recharging our batteries at the cottage and was able to go on a dog walk down the canal daily. This meant that we didn’t have to use the car too much, which is sometimes one of our holiday stresses. The cottage has lots of added bonuses with the fully equipped kitchen, the smart tv, the canal views and lots of board games. The bed is really comfy and we both slept really well during our stay. The mezzanine area was an added bonus and a nice change from sitting downstairs. It’s a lovely cottage in a lovely little village. To be able to watch the narrow boats from the downstairs windows is such an experience. It’s in a great location and a great base for exploring further a field. We would definitely recommend Canal Cottage and hopefully able to visit again soon.

The cottage is beautiful and comfortable. Our host had thought of everything a two legged and four legged guest could wish for. The local walks and amenities are great and we couldn't have wanted anymore. It was a truly delightful break.

Lovely cottage in a lovely place. It was beautifully appointed and comfortable. Easy walking or cycling along the tow path and nice walks up onto the local hills. Slightly awkward access from the street but compensated by the charm of the location. Nice to be able to lock bikes in garage. Wood burning stove and plenty of dry wood was a bonus as was the smart TV and excellent kitchen.

This is a lovely place, right on the canal in a definitely non-touristy village. In spite of that, it's really easy to get to a lot of interesting places - only an hour to the heart of the Yorkshire Dales, or rather less to get to places like Leeds or Haworth or Saltaire. The property itself has been refurbished to a better standard than most Airbnb properties, and is perfect for a couple or small family.

A fantastic cottage in a great location next to the canal towpath with lovely views of the canal and moors. The property has been tastefully renovated to a high standard and is very well equipped. The living area is spacious and comfortable (the photos don’t do it justice). Communication with Geraldine was good and checking in and out straight forward. All in all, a perfect place to stay.

This is a great location for a holiday, the cottage was well presented and immaculately clean upon arrival. We spent a great weekend there, visiting local places which we originally visited many years ago (Bolton Abbey and Haworth). The cottage was comfortable, clean and had a lovely location with watching canal boats gently sailing past the windows featuring as a great alternative to TV watching. There was just the 2 of us, I would say if there were more occupants privacy whilst using the mezzanine as a bedroom might be an issue. I would very much recommend this cottage for a short-break or longer holiday.

Canal cottage is a truly lovely place to stay. The photos can't really show how light and airy it is. It's really comfortable and relaxing. Everything is very high quality. We loved being by the canal and Farnhill is a handy location for exploring the Yorkshire Dales. Our host supported our stay with great attention to detail from the clear check-in instructions to the folder of useful info in the the cottage. Much appreciated. Hope to return for a longer stay.
